South Park Censored?

As offensive as most [well fine, all] episodes of South Park are because of the use of foul language [especially Cartman] and inappropriate scenes for kids, they’re funny. You know they are. And Kenny is absolutely adorable! But things didn’t go too well for the 200th episode.

The four main boys are in the foreground, waving at the viewer. Kenny is climbed on a wooden sign labeled "SOUTH PARK". In the background, the entire population of the city and all the other characters present on the show have gathered, looking at the viewer also.

The South Park family!

Yes, the show has actually been going smoothly until recently, episode 200 was censored because it bleeped out the name “Muhammad”. What made this look worse was the fact that Muhammad was portrayed not as Muhammad but as a bear or at least someone in a bear costume, which is of course offensive/insulting to Islam. Whoops! Careful South Park!

Quoting an article by Eric Goldman: “After “200” aired last week, a US-based website named RevolutionMuslim.com wrote, “We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them.” Van Gogh was a Dutch filmmaker who was murdered in 2004, for a film about the treatment of Muslim women.”

Well… happy 200th episode anniversary South Park!

*Comedy Central acknowledged that the bleeping was their fault and not Matt and Trey’s, and South Park is back with a brand new episode this week.
