Time out’s over and it’s time for the sports dudes to get their heads in the games and for the students to get their voices in the cheers because the UAAP season has arrived!
It’s that time of the year again where the eight universities of the Philippines go head to head in different sports, fighting for that championship title. And it’s also that time of the year where UAAP tickets are demanded and sold like prestige goods. Everyone wants to watch it live. Everyone wants to be a part of one of the biggest sports events in the country. Everyone’s fueling their voices to cheer for their teams in the Araneta Coliseum. And now that it’s on its 73rd season, who will claim the victory seat in the end? Which team will outwit which in the series of games that we are about to witness?
And, the biggest question really in every season is: which university will bring home the men’s basketball championship? Just as how much the world is excited with the Netherlands vs. Spain game for the finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tomorrow and how much America was for the Lakers vs. Celtics game in the NBA finals, Philippines feels the same intensity and excitement for the UAAP basketball, men’s division.
Which team’s going to claim title to honor and pride in the basketball court? How will this part of UAAP basketball history be written? I’m excited to find out which team’s name will be extolled by October. Will the Ateneo Blue Eagles soar once again for its three-peat this year? Or will some other team break its wings?
Will the De La Salle Green Archers be able to shoot for the prized trophy again after two years? Or will it be the one to get shot?
Will it be the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers who will roar their way in and on to the championships? Or will they end up being the ones scratched and roared at? Will they get another trophy to add to their collection of 18?
Will the Far Eastern University Tamaraws charge and knock out the seven other teams or will they get kicked out by the others?
Or will the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons put on the fighting mask and grab that championship title again after 23 years? Or will they still be no fighters?
Will the University of the East Red Warriors show some real ferocity now, just like how warriors should be when they’re eying a win? Or will they still show a spirit unlike their name?
What about the Adamson Soaring Falcons? Will they finally take a flight into the basketball world’s sky and be this season’s champions? Or will they just flap their wings a bit and end up falling back to the ground?
Will the National University Bulldogs be barking a word of congratulations or a phrase of better luck next time when this season ends?
Every team wants to get to the Final Four and obviously, each team, each school got their eye on that championship title, but the question is: who wants it more? Who’s going to beat all the other teams?
The wars start today. Feel the passion. Feel the intensity.
Which team are you on?
