(5) Favorite Christmas Carols of All Time

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh, what’s fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Hey!

As early as October, Christmas tunes like this fill the air in many shopping malls and restaurants as happy servers and customer service agents attend to your needs with their big smiles and their Santa hats (or Rudolph red noses). Come November, some people start switching their playlists from pop songs to Christmas melodies as they set up their colorful Christmas trees in their cozy living rooms. And now that December has come along and with Christmas only a few days away, more and more people are starting to feel the Christmas spirit and have totally made Christmas songs their alarms and ringtones. Radio stations are starting to play more of  ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ than ‘Like a G6’ and TV shows have been airing Christmas-themed episodes since last week. Looks like we’re being reminded every single day of the beauty of Christmas as the season’s songs surround us with every chance they get.

So, are the songs working? Did they help set your mood to Christmas with all the happiness overflowing in your heart and the spirit of sharing and love blooming from within you?

Since it’s 5 days to Christmas (wow, it’s less than a week now), I’ll be sharing here 5 of my personal favorite Christmas carols which I make a point to play every Christmas because it makes me love Christmas more and more each year.

1. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

This Frank Sinatra original has always made me smile during Christmas Eve because it reminds me of the serenity that Christmas brings. Peace of mind, peace of heart, and so much love being given and shared around the world. It makes me remember families and friends who laugh around the dinner table the way they’ve never laughed before. And whenever this song plays, I always picture snow falling outside the window and where little kids play with snow in the outside scene. This is just a beautiful piece that makes you smile and teary-eyed at the same time.

2. Welcome Christmas

There’s just so much emotions that rushes within me whenever I hear this song. I smile and then I think about people around the world who are celebrating Christmas but in another special way different from how we celebrate it here. It makes me feel that even though we all belong to different parts of the world and who share different cultures, we come together in a spirit of joy and unity during the season of Christmas. Welcoming Christmas has never been so beautiful but to sing it with such joy while thinking of the richness of the season and how it brings us together.

3. Most Wonderful Day of the Year

Need I say why? Christmas is just the most wonderful day of the year, agree? Well, apart from your birthday, yes, it must be! Right, right? With presents, with Christmas trees, with lots of lights along the streets, around the house, and everywhere you go, with families and friends getting together for a meal or two, and with people spreading love and remembering the idea of sharing, Christmas just makes us believe for a day that this world is filled with colors and eternal goodness.

4. Christmas to Remember

Every Christmas, there’s always something special, whether it’s the manner of celebration or a random surprise. Maybe, your father or your brother whom you’ve not seen in the longest time comes home for Christmas dinner and gives you a big hug. Or, you celebrated Christmas in a way that made your holiday and your life so meaningful. Every Christmas is different, like how every memory of yours is. Sometimes you make it a Christmas to remember or sometimes, it just comes along unexpectedly. Whatever it is, Christmas is always a time of wonderful memories to cherish through the years. I hope you get to say that every Christmas is a Christmas to remember. And this year, I hope you get another special Christmas! 🙂

5. Give Love on Christmas Day

Why don’t you give love on Christmas day? Yeah, why not? It’s that one time of the year when you get to be reminded to love, to share, and to be selfless. Be kind. Be generous. Show how you are full of love even just on the holiday season (but I hope you continue to give love even after every Christmas). I guess this song just sums up what Christmas is really about – about reminding us to be selfless, to think of other people besides ourselves and how we can make someone else happy in the midst of this gloomy and dangerous world.

It’s the season when you think of writing people letters, of giving them gifts, of inviting them over for dinner, and of helping out a random stranger on the street. It’s the season when you remember other people, whether you know them or not. It’s when you remind yourself that life is about sharing and not just about earning. Christmas is when you share a part of yourself to the world, when you think about how you want to help, and about you want to bring a change.

Remember, there’s no better gift than love. It’s free and it doesn’t have an expiration date, so why hesitate? This world needs love more than anything else right now, especially right now, so if every one of us can give even just a bit of our love every day, this world would be a better place. So, if ever you need to understand what Christmas is really about, just listen to this song, and you will be reminded. Just beautiful!

As we listen to Christmas songs, I hope we get to really feel what Christmas is really about and what message it’s trying to bring. Feel the joy. Share the love. Find the meaning of Christmas in sharing.
